Canyon de Chelly Workshop October 2011

REGISTRATION NOW OPEN! DATES: OCTOBER 13th-16th 2011

This workshop will give participants the chance to paint a very historic landmark in the southwest, Canyon de Chelly. For decades, some of our most celebrated American artists traveled to this location and created iconic paintings and drawings. The first two days will be led through Canyon by Navajo guides and will have a chance to paint several historic locations. On the last two days of the workshop we will paint from the rim of the Canyon, which offers great views. The cottonwood trees should be a great shade of yellow during the workshop. Logan will do daily demonstrations, as well as work individually with all workshop participants.
The class size will be limited to 12.

Cost- $475 plus $190 for guides, lunch and transportation
Lodging and meals are extra

I started another blog that will document the process of working on 1 painting for 1 year (or at least 1 year, if it isn't good enough by then, I will keep working on it). Toadlena Trading Post

I have been on the road for a couple of days and spent yesterday and today at the Toadlena Trading post. I wanted to spend some time at the Trading Post to soak in the environment and look for some people to paint. I found some local Navajo people to paint and got a taste of life on the Rez. There is a small Navajo community in the area and lots of characters wander in all day. The view from the Toadlena Trading Post shows the famous Two Gray Hills. This region is known for its weavers. Mark Winter, who runs the Trading Post supports almost every rug weaver in this community. He purchases and sells the rugs at the Trading Post. While I was there I witnessed a few Grandmothers come in to sell their recently completed rugs to Mark. He is very fair with them and tries to keep them happy so they keep producing work and keep bringing their work to Mark for first pick.

The Toadlena Trading Post

Mark and his staff encourage these weavers to do their best work and do their best to get the younger generation involved in weaving. Mark buys every single first weaving that is brought to him by members of the community. Some of the large tapestry weavings can take a year or two to produce.

I was able to meet one of the Grandmothers named Virginia, who I am told is like the Mozart of weaving. She demonstrated how she spins her wool and did a bit of weaving for me as well.

The interior of the Trading Post feels like it must have in the old days. There is a big nickel plated stove inside and an old barber chair for visitors to sit in while gossiping about the latest goings on in Toadlena.

The Toadlena Trading post is located just 45 minutes north of Gallup, NM. It is well worth the drive to visit. I plan on coming back again soon.

Recommended Book

I often get emails from students asking where to start when they want to improve their paintings. I will try to list some recommended books from time to time here.

Composition is such an important element to making great paintings. So my first recommendation will be Composition of Outdoor Painting, by Edgar Payne.

This book covers several types of compositions and gives great visual examples from several artists, besides Payne. Though this book is geared towards outdoor painting, the composition principals apply to all types of subjects, from still life to figures.

A strong composition will help a good painting become a great painting.

Land snorkeling is taking the time to savor aspects of nature we ordinarily don’t see or pay attention to. Land snorkelers wander thru nature with no intention of hiking to a destination. One contemplates what we find in nature and explore every possible connection with all parts of our natural world. Each blade of grass, rock, or creature has some connection to us. We ask questions looking at nature and find out what that connection might be – we develop our cognitive and abstract muscles to solve the problem. We have fun doing it. It helps us to think. Our imagination and creativity is enhanced and richens our lives in a healthy and productive way. It’s free and it’s fun.

Land snorkeling is reestablishing the ancient connections to our landscape. We open up all of our senses to experience the hidden treasures of nature. We develop our intellect thru our senses. We sniff it, touch it, examine the texture, color, shape, etc. etc.
We look closely at things – like a feather found in the grass, a wing design, a rocks texture, and the pattern of a tree growing.

I was sorry to hear about the passing of artist, Garry Gilmartin while on my recent painting trip to Cape Cod. I showed in a gallery with him out there for about 5 years. Only met him a few times, but the few times we talked we had great conversations about art and he recently gave me a really nice panel to paint on.

Here is some info on Garry:

"Sunday Morning" by Garry Gilmartin

Garry Gilmartin was born in Palmer, Massachusetts in 1949. He attended Paier School of Art in Hamden, Connecticut and spent a postgraduate year studying under Ken Davies. For the next 15 years, Garry pursued an award-winning commercial illustration career in New York City and Boston.
Mr. Gilmartin fell in love with Cape Cod while visiting friends and commercial illustration became a thing of the past as he became immersed in painting New England, its structures and its people. The positive response to his fine art work came immediately. His work is in the permanent collection of the Ashville Art Museum,
Ashville, NC.

According to Elizabeth Ives Hunter, Executive Director of the Cape Cod Museum of Art, Garry Gilmartin’s paintings are “a magical window into a world of tranquil beauty.” He managed “to capture the essence of light falling across form and, by passing that image through a personal filter of emphasis and subordination, brought the viewer along to share his inspiration.”

Focus on Design in Painting: The Three Compadres

As the newest stage of contemporary realism, which I came to call NOVOREALISM, is gaining steam with great new generation of young American talent, it is showing itself in a diverse variety of existing and distinct forms.

"Realism" in painting is often thought of as something that "looks just like a photograph," which in fact cannot be further from its actual substance. "Photorealism" is a respected and established part of a modernist expression, which is aimed at recreating a technological effect of a photograph. "Realism" is based solely on the laws and principles of a human perception of a visual world. Even when "realist" painters use photographs (even though when they do, it is most often as a very secondary reference) it is done entirely based on their long-developed ability to interpret visual reality "live."

One of the key elements of this human interpretation of "real" is our sense of "design" which is aimed at making personal choices of importance and priorities within the chosen subject through the arrangement of main compositional forms - something no techno gadget is capable of making regardless of a price tag.

Great friends who shared many travel adventures together, Glen, Logan and Eric are some of today's leading young artists investigating in their enormously effective andaesthetically satisfying work the visual force of "design."

San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

I recently went on a trip to San Miguel de Allende with a group of 15 artists. Frank Gardner put the whole trip together for us, including finding us a great place to stay, Casa Heyne. The villa was great, approx 16,ooo sq ft., with a cooking and cleaning staff. We were very spoiled. Paintings from this trip will be in two exhibitions in February. The first is on February 12th at the Cape Cod Museum of Art, in Dennis, MA. The second show is at Addison Art Gallery on February 13th, in Orleans, MA. The following pictures are in no particular order, all of the artists in the photos should have links to the right of the page, if not write me and ask for their websites.

Portrait Painting Workshop Announced

This 3-day class will focus on several aspects of painting the portrait, working with live models. Some basic topics to be covered include; proportion, color, design, lighting, value, and many more. Each day will include an instructor demonstration, as well as personal instruction with the students. This workshop will take place in Logan Maxwell Hagege's East Coast studio in Fall River, MA. Besides learning about painting the portrait, you will also get an inside view into Hagege's studio process.

I will be teaching a Figure Painting Workshop that will focus on painting the figure outdoors. We will study color and value in this class. Since light moves so fast, we won't focus as much on composition or drawing. Instead we will focus on making studies from life. Drawing and composition should be studied for years and take a long time to develop. So does color and value study, but I feel like this is something that is possible to teach in a short workshop like this. I hope that my students will take something valuable from this class and ideas in this class will be the starting point to painting great color from life! It has been a while since I have posted anything. My show in Arizona went well, we saw some red dots which is a good thing. I don't have to much to report, I just finished this painting "By the Church Gate". It was a fun one to paint. Oh, I started moving into my new studio and have done a handful of paintings there. It is nice and big so I am excited to start some big paintings. Keep your eyes peeled for a Studio Opening Party Date sometime in June.

I will be teaching classes there once or twice a month (starting in June). The classes will be like mini workshops, they will be a full day with a demo in the first part of the day and then personal instruction while you paint during the second half. Solo Exhibition - Scottsdale, Arizona

Lindsey and I are gearing up for our quick trip to Scottsdale, Arizona for my Solo Exhibition at John B. Strong Fine Art. I have been preparing for this show for months, it is quite a relief to be done with the paintings and to have everything at the gallery.

I did 20 paintings for this show, all of the work is Southwestern subject matter. The funny thing is that half of the show was painted in the North East. But I enjoy being able to take trips into the Southwest, and do tons of studies outdoors and take a lot of photos, and then retreating to the North East to do my studio work. When I get back to the North East it feels like a different world, but it allows me to paint freely without too much outside influence from the Southwest.

The artwork was done in a variety of mediums. I always enjoy going to shows that have a few drawings, some oils, and some water media. So I tried my best to do a variety of things so everyone who sees the show will enjoy it.
I tried something new at this show too. I designed a poster and printed up about 50 of them, that we will be selling at the show. They are all hand silk-screened, I look forward to seeing the public reaction to the posters. I had a good time designing it.

Time to find a new studio

Here is a photo of the studio I have been painting in for the past 7 or 8 months. It is a 1 bedroom apt., it works out great I have been painting in the bedroom and use the living room for shipping and frame storage. I don't sleep here, so I can keep it pretty messy. Most of the paintings laying around are ones that I am working on for my one man show at John B. Strong Fine Art, in February. The 5 family house that this apartment is part of is being sold so I need to move out! I haven't found a new studio yet, but I think it should be pretty easy, lots of old mills in Fall River, which would work well as a studio.
Here is a photo out of the studio window today, after about 30 min of snow. That is my van parked across the way. I figured I would finish the painting I was working on and then head home before the snow got too bad. Turned out I waited too long. I tried driving but my van just kept sliding down the hill that it was parked on. So I gave up and decided to walk home.
Here I am almost home, it wasn't bad just a couple of miles. Kind of fun for a westerner like me. By the time I got to the park next to my apartment it was a full blown winter wonderland.
I ran into my girlfriend who was sledding with her niece. Still snowing, we are supposed to get 9-12 inches!

I have not been able to post for a while. I was on a road trip for a while, then wasn't able to get back to painting until just recently. So here are a couple of new paintings. The painting above is a 7x5 gouache. I painted a bunch of these and am sending them to John B. Strong Fine Art for a holiday show. I did a 12x12 from this study for a show of 12x12 paintings at Giacobbe-Fritz in Santa Fe also. The painting below will be in that show also.
This painting was retouched the other day, I painted it a while ago and it was sort of haunting me. It didn't seem complete and the colors felt too cool. I also thought a figure would make it a little more interesting. This one is 9x12 painted in oil.

Getting ready for a big road trip!

I haven't been posting much because I am getting ready for a big road trip across the country. I am busy getting the van I just bought ready for the road so my girlfriend and I can camp along the way. I plan on doing a lot of painting and my girlfriend will be doing a lot of photography, I will post some of that on here. We will also be stopping off and visiting as many art museums as possible along the way. So I don't have too much new work to show, I am working on a larger Native American Portrait right now but it isn't ready for anyone to see! I will post a portrait from a recent group of paintings I did that are on view right now at John B. Strong Fine Art in Scottsdale, AZ.
